L’Orient Express fût l’invention d’un Belge

C’est à l’issue de l’un de ses voyages aux États-Unis en 1868 à bord des trains Pullman que l’ingénieur belge Georges Nagelmackers revient avec l’idée qui sera à l’origine de l’Orient-Express. Les heures de son périple à bord des wagons-lits américains se sont en effet révélées si inconfortables qu’il décide à son retour en Europe de créer des trains de luxe à destination d’une clientèle aisée. Quelques années plus tard naîtra l’Orient-Express, le premier train alliant confort et raffinement sur une longue distance.

Des innovations à l’origine de son succès

La vitesse est une des premières raisons du succès de l'Orient-Express, d'autant plus que les liens touristiques et économiques entre l'Europe et l'Empire ottoman sont particulièrement soutenus à la fin du XIXème siècle. 

Le confort à bord de ce train n'aura de cesse de s'améliorer. Pour favoriser le wagon-restaurant, une des clés du succès de l'Orient-Express, le train est rénové pour que les passagers puissent circuler d'une voiture à l'autre. Plus besoin de s’arrêter pour passer d'une voiture à une autre.

L'Orient-Express continue de s'améliorer avec des wagons-lits luxueux qui reprennent le modèle américain des sleeping cars créées par l'ingénieur George Pullman tout en transposant le confort de l'appartement bourgeois européen. 

Le scandale qui inspira Agatha Christie

En 1929, le train qui relie Paris à Istanbul est bloqué pendant douze jours à cause de la neige. Cet événement inspira à Agatha Christie son célèbre roman policier : "Le crime de l'Orient-Express". Pour Agatha Christie, le train coupé du monde pendant plusieurs jours va devenir le cadre exceptionnel d’un assassinat qui sera, lui aussi, très original.
